Bosch Router – a Tale of 2 Models
The Bosch router tends to have good reviews, but it is not without fault. We will be looking at two models, the PR20EVSK and the 1617EVSPK Plunge and Fixed-Base Variable-Speed Router Kit. I will be presenting the pros and cons in both models and from that hopefully you can decide whether a Bosch router is for you. So let’s start with the first Bosch router.
The Bosch PR20EVSK Colt:
The Bosch PR20EVSK Colt Variable Speed Router is a small but powerful router. It’s one horsepower, 5.6 amp motor has a variable speed range of between 16,030 5000 RPMs. One of the points that causes many users to be backed off from using a router is the feature that they used to start rapidly with full torque, making them difficult to control. This small Bosch router has a soft start feature which makes it much easier to control. The depth control adjustments are very easily and accurately controlled by an adjustment wheel located on the back of the base. Weighing only 3 pounds, and being ergonomically designed with a palm shaped grip, this router is signed for one-handed operation.
Let’s see what some actual owners have had to say about this model:
“I already own three other “full size” routers so this little router is quite a pleasant surprise to use. It is light weight and very solid; hinge-mortising, edge-triming, and rounding-over are a breeze.” However later in the review he does mention a problem. “As mentioned by other reviewers, the “Shaft-Locking Button” does not hold and needs to be redesigned.” Read the full review.
“I have been using my new Colt router for a month now and it is a wonderful addition to my shop. I have a large bench mounted router, but this tool is now being used more often than the more powerful cousin.” Read the full review.
Over all most users are very happy with the ease of use and the size of this Bosch router but you should look over the reviews and see both the good and the bad.
The Bosch 1617EVSPK Plunge and Fixed-Base Variable-Speed Router Kit:
This model comes with two bases and can operate as both a plunge router and a fixed base router. It also has the soft-start feature making it easier to use. It has built in Constant Response Circuitry which maintains a constant speed through the cut for better results. Again this model allows for very precise depth adjustment making it easy to get very professional results even if you are not an expert.
Again the best information on a product comes from user reviews, so lets see what they have to say about this Bosch router:
“I agree with another buyer who said that this router does very professional work and can make anyone look like they know what they are doing. Even my wife who has never used a router was able to use this with ease.” See full Review.
“I’ve had this router package for about two years now & use it on average 2 or 3 times a week. At first I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Now that the honeymoon is over I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a decent design with a few minor annoyances & a couple of major faults.” he then itemizes things he likes and doesn’t like and the third item is, “3. The Bosch plunger is a normally locked type. I like the plunge lever to be normally unlocked like Hitachi & DeWalt it makes it much easier to set depth of cut.” See the full review.
“I can’t say enough about this router combo set! One of the many things I love about this set is how easy it is to switch from the plunge base to the fixed
base, and the variable speed adjustment.
I really enjoy woodworking and I work with this tool all day, it does everything I need it to do and does an excellent job.
What more could you want. This machine is powerful and very quiet. Setup is quick, easy, precise and locks down tight. The soft start is amazing – no kick when you turn it on. I recommend the dust extraction kit (RA1173). It gets about 99% of the dust and chips, you’ll be happy you did because it puts an end to the mounds of sawdust that routers spread all over your work area. That was the full review.
Again I always recommend looking over all of the reviews to get a full picture and then you can tell whether this Bosch router is the router for you.
